One of my friends asked her f-list to post happy, poppy 80s and 90s music on her FB wall, so I posted one of my all-time faves; Material Girl by Madonna!

Her wanting us to cheer her up resulted in me being cheered up too, because how can you NOT get a silly, happy grin listening to this fun & poppy song? It's SO HAPPY AND CATCHY. How can you NOT get a silly, happy grin watching this music video? It's SO CUTE AND FUN.

I don't feel like doing my schoolwork at all...haha...but at least now I'm in a better mood about it! XD

Madonna was probably my favourite singer when I was a kid (I'm talking about when I was of kindergarten age). Along with Queen! Who were your favourite singers and groups when you were little? (AKA the first singers you remember ever becoming a fan of).
Although, maybe saying 'becoming a fan of' is slightly misleading. The first singer/group I was ever an actual ~FAN~ of, or fangirled over (as in, learning facts about them and buying their merchandise and screaming at the TV) was New Kids on the Block, but I was already 9 years old by then. I'm referring more to the absolute earliest pop music you remember enjoying, as far back as your memory takes you to fuzzy recollections of jumping and singing along to RECORDS or whatever technology existed at the time of your childhood (seeing as I have people of all ages on my f-list!) ;)

My earliest musical memories are all of obscure Jewish bands and singers, especially of a kitschy nature - think what Weird Al does, but instead, they make the songs Jewy. I *still* sometimes hear a song and go "why is the radio playing a Jewish...ohhhhhh wait, this must be the original version!"

Hahah really? Do you mean that you grew up with Hebrew covers of English pop songs? Because the Chinese and Japanese totally do that too! Also the Vietnamese seem to be obsessed (or at least used to be) with covering Japanese pop songs back in the 80s and 90s, so I'm sure they've probably covered lots of English songs, too!

No, not Hebrew covers...literally taking the tune and rewriting the words so they reflect Jewish life. The main two are a band called Shlock Rock and a singer called Country Yossi...off the top of my head, some songs I know Jewy versions of (bracketed are the Jewy versions): Amadeus (Achashverosh), Flying Purple People Eater (Flying Lokshen Kugel Eater), The Coward of the County (The Nebbish of the Shteeble), My Sharona (My Menorah), Every Breath You Take (Every Bite You Take), If You Like Pina Coladas (If You Like Tehini on Challah), Ob La Di Ob La Da (Havdalah), Walk the Line (Cause I'm a Jew), Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting (Chanuka Nights Alright For Lighting)...that's just a few that come to mind!

A good example is the song Those Were Days My Friend...the first time I heard the real one, I was soooooooo confused, cause the version I grew up with went "Once upon a time, in ancient Egypt, Moses asked that all the Jews go free, but Pharaoh and his army was so stubborn, they ended up beneath the churning sea" instead of "Once upon a time there was a tavern, etc".

And yayyy for MJ! So what if it's not 'original'? Enjoying music isn't about being original. It's about enjoying what you like. ;)

When I was little we had a single of "Don't Worry Be Happy" that I made my parents play over and over. That was my first favorite song. :) I wish I knew what happened to that record.

Michael Jackson - I had a friend who owned Moonwalker on video and we watched it obsessively, aged about 6.

Then when I started Junior School, aged 7/8, one of the Big Girls on the school bus had a copy of Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet which she cajoled the bus driver to play every morning. So Bon Jovi became my second great childhood music love.
