Didn't Damon and Carlton say they weren't ever going to reveal what the numbers meant? Not that I'm disappointed or anything, but I know I read that somewhere...
I think they've vaguely talked about how they are part of the Valenzetti equation (http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Valenzetti_Equation), but they've never really said more than that. Maybe Jacob sees all these people as part of a similar equation?
I'm not sure what to think, seems to be just another piece in the puzzle but without the other pieces it doesn't quite make sense yet. The insight on the numbers is interesting and explains why Dogan said it was so important that they stay safe. Also if Kwon is Jin, then apparently protecting the island is a job only a man can do.
The numbers being associated with the characters is something I already knew was coming, because it was one of the spoilers I read back in December. Although I understood it to mean that the numbers were associated with the Oceanic 6; seeing as Sawyer is listed instead of Kate, that's obviously not the case. Apparently everyone's name is on the cave walls (the entire manifest of 815), but:
