Since people can't seem to STFU about this trial I didn't know existed until yesterday, here is an AWESOME quote I found on LJ that I will copy & paste:

Lawyers/law students: The jury couldn't find that she was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, because the prosecutor/state did not meet its burden of proof - that doesn't mean she was innocent. Yes, this whole thing is tragic but only the jury was fit to make a decision in our justice system.

Non-lawyers: OMG! How can people be so stupid? Guilty guilty guilty!!!!

Feel free to switch "lawyers/law students" with "people who don't let their emotions overcome their logic". Because I'm no lawyer or law student but I definitely fit into that group. :P

That said, watching people fighting on the internet over this is fucking entertaining as all hell. ;)

This is the second post to this affect on my flist. I feel like I have missed out because I totally don't even know the crime, haven't followed the trial and have missed out on everything! I didn't know I was living in a hole! Haha.

I knew bits and pieces, mostly what I saw on the cover of National Enquirer while in line at the grocery store. It really seems to have consumed the US the way Homolka consumed ours...the cynic in me kind of wonders if the only reason it's so huge is because of the "cute white kid" syndrome. =/

I NEVER heard of this girl until yesterday. Mind you, I live in Quebec, so it's not like all American news is focused on that much here, but I have local friends who have been commenting on it and seem to know what it is. It took me awhile to figure out wtf they were talking about. Soooo weird. o_O

You're not being cynical. If you ask me, you're 110% correct about the "cute white kid" thing. If that kid was black or hispanic, we wouldn't be hearing about her. There's a Family Guy clip I need to post about that, actually!

I think one of the reasons this story got so much attention is due to the fact that the mother waited an entire month to report her missing. Then, all these photos leaked of her partying and drinking while the daughter was already dead and gone! I haven't heard of many cases like these (nor do I wish to). What followed was a web of confusing and insane lies.

The whole thing is disgusting. I found out about it through my many American friends. Yes, she is a cute white girl, yes, other ethnicities don't get this much attention and it's atrocious.

I may not know much about the American justice system, or mine either, and I'm sure they came up with the most logical verdict considering the evidence, etc.! I think I'm mostly horrified that they were able to manipulate it the way they did. It makes me just as furious as when they set Karla Homolka free!

I read so many murder cases every day that I can't keep track of them all! How horrible is that? :( I have definitely read about someone who went partying after their kid went missing but I don't even know if it's the same person. That's such a depressing thought, I don't even know!

One of the murder cases I *was* kind of following was in the UK, about a young couple (in their early 20s I think) who were convicted of killing their roommate. Have you heard about this one? I think I get a lot of UK news because for one of my Yahoo! accounts, way back when, I put that my home was the UK. So now I get so much British news, lol...
