Rocking the purple
Oct. 20th, 2010 06:45 pmSo, as many of you (hopefully!) already know, today is Wear Purple Against Homophobia Day. (Well, maybe that's not the official name, but something along those lines.) So I decked myself out in purple head to toe this morning (and missed the first bus because of it, lol), and saw this as an excellent teaching opportunity. I spoke to my sec III class about why I was wearing purple and told them about the recent suicides in the United States, and it (sorry, this is going to sound completely tactless) worked out timing-wise because we are doing a unit on bullying. I know that sounds nasty, and obviously I don't take pleasure in using somebody's tragedy as a lesson plan, but I think it's an important issue to talk about (to put it MILDLY), and when you're a teacher, you gotta jump on any and every teaching opportunity you can.
I didn't have to tell my sec V group why I was wearing purple, though. They were wearing purple themselves! Omg, the next generation is gonna ROCK, is all I can think.
Anyway, I'm grateful to be able to talk about this in school today. THIS is what being a teacher is all about! <3

Date: 2010-10-20 10:53 pm (UTC)I don't think it's tactless in the least! It's a teachable moment. I know that phrase is overused these days, but that's what it is! (Well, that, and what Homer Simpson might call a "crisitunity". :p)
PS: I got your FB message the other day, and was totally touched. I absolutely feel the same way, and I can't wait to visit home next summer and to introduce you and Mike to Hiedi and for all of us to hang out for a night and get re-acquainted. I really, really super hope that you're in town when we come through! (Tentatively anticipated to be late-June/early-July 2011.)
