The more I think about the finale, the more I love it. Just LOVED it.
There seems to be a general agreement among the majority of Lost fans online as to what their understanding of the finale is, and I agree with it 110%. I think it's a wonderful, beautiful concept, and it's absolutely what I believe. I'll write it out here.

The Island was real. Everything that happened on the Island really happened.
The alt-universe (or sideways universe, or whatever you choose to call it), is the limbo/purgatory/paradise they created for themselves so they could all find each other when they die.
Yes, everyone in the sideways universe is dead, like Christian said, but they all died in different times/places.
Some of them died on the Island (like Juliet, Sun and Jin, Jack); some of them made it off the Island and made it home and died later on (like Kate, Sawyer, Lapidus, Miles); some of them continued to live on the Island for perhaps thousands of more years until they finally died (Ben and Hurley). The point is, they all got to find each other and meet in their limbo world (sideways universe) so they could help each other 'move on'.
Where they 'moved on' to (that glowing light) is whatever you want it to be. That's why the church they were in had MANY different religious symbols on it next to the coffin (the symbol for Christianity, for Judaism, for Islam, and for Buddhism, among others), because you can choose to believe whatever you want to. Like if you're Christian, maybe you think they moved on to heaven. Of if you're Buddhist, maybe you believe they went on to be reincarnated.
Or any other idea.
Some people said they became the light of the Island. That works, too!
Some people said they just...stopped existing. That is also possible!
The point is, you believe whatever you want. I think it works so well.

No, we didn't get any answers about the Island, but if you were still hoping for answers by this point, I think that's a little naive! Still, I don't blame people for being upset about the finale, because they feel cheated. I don't feel cheated at all, but I understand why some people would.

I used to stress out about finding answers, but I stopped being like that, and I'm glad, because now I'm at total peace with the show.

All that said, the ending is completely open to interpretation. I think we can all agree that there is no right or wrong answers. The 'answer' is whatever you want it to be. You're free to believe whatever you like. I love that. :)
