Translation help :)

Heya, fluent Japanese speakers who read my LJ! I was wondering if one of you could possibly help me out with a line I don't quite understand in this ADOURABLE little song I can't stop listening to? ^^;

Here's the part of the song it's from, for context, with the sentence that's giving me trouble in bold:

ハリネズミから、ハリをとったら
ただのネズミにも、なれない
だから3本残しとこ

So, she's saying her hedgehog (her 'needle rat', lol, the play on words with 'rat' doesn't quite work in English!) is more than just a rat even if she took off his needles...so she leaves him...3 books? Whaaa? I'm missing something here, obviously. ;) Could someone explain this to me?

本 is not only a counter for books but also for long cylindrical things.. so I'm thinking maybe that means she left him with only 3 needles. XD Poor hedgehog!!!! My headgehog Spike (http://www.facebook.com/people/Spike-Igel/100000739928534) doesn't like this song! ;__;
